Detailed Daily Itinerary
Day 1 Itinerary
Colombo → Sigiriya → Minneriya National Park → Sigiriya Begin your journey towards the Cultural Triangle and make Sigiriya your base for the next two nights. SIGIRIYA After arriving in the Sigiriya area, settle into your accommodation and have some time to relax. Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka's major archaeological attractions, centred around the enormous rock fortress rising about 200 metres above the surrounding landscape. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rather than climbing Sigiriya today, keep the main attraction for the following morning when you can visit the rock with more energy. MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK Head to Minneriya National Park for a jeep safari. Your planned 3–4 hour safari is a good amount of time to explore the park. The landscape is particularly known for its large elephant gatherings, while the park also offers opportunities to see: Asian elephants Water buffalo Crocodiles Deer Monkeys Wild boar Numerous bird species The safari is best treated as a wildlife experience rather than a guaranteed animalsighting tour. EVENING — SIGIRIYA Return to Sigiriya after the safari. Sigiriya Village Tour Optional Ayurwedic herbal spa optional (Evening) Have dinner and relax at your hotel. There is no need to add another major attraction tonight because Sigiriya Rock is the main focus for tomorrow morning. Overnight: Sigiriya
Day 2 Itinerary
Sigiriya → Dambulla → Kandy MORNING — SIGIRIYA LION ROCK Start the day with the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This should be your major activity of the morning. The climb takes you through the ancient gardens towards the rock, followed by the famous Lion's Paw area and the steep ascent towards the summit. At the top, explore the remains of the ancient palace complex and enjoy the extensive views over the surrounding forest. The site also contains the famous ancient frescoes and the remains of an elaborate hydraulic and garden system. What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes Water Hat/cap Sunscreen Light clothing Camera Sri Lanka Tourism specifically recommends starting the climb early because of the heat DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE After leaving Sigiriya, continue to Dambulla. Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple / Golden Temple, another UNESCO-listed cultural site. The complex consists of five principal caves containing Buddhist statues, paintings and murals. The temple complex dates back to the 1st century BCE, with later additions and restorations The climb to the caves involves granite steps, so comfortable footwear is useful. CONTINUE TO KANDY After Dambulla, drive through the central highlands towards Kandy. Spice and herbal garden visit Check into your Kandy hotel and use the remainder of the day to relax. EVENING — KANDY LAKE Take a leisurely walk around Kandy Lake. You can explore the streets around the lake, enjoy the atmosphere of the city and have dinner before returning to the hotel. Overnight: Kandy
Day 3 Itinerary
KANDY CULTURAL & TEA DAY ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS, PERADENIYA Begin with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya. Allow plenty of time to explore the gardens rather than treating this as a quick photo stop. Highlights include: Palm avenues Giant trees Orchid collections Tropical plants Flower gardens The expansive lawns and landscaped areas Mahaweli River surroundings The scenery becomes increasingly mountainous as you travel around the Kandy highlands. KANDY CITY Return to Kandy and explore the city. Possible stops include: Kandy Lake Kandy viewpoint Local markets Traditional handicraft shops Gem Museum Wood Carvings Batik Factory Streets around the Temple of the Tooth Cultural Dance show Kandy is the historic capital of the Kandyan Kingdom and is particularly associated with the Sacred Temple of the Tooth. TEMPLE OF THE SACRED TOOTH RELIC End the day at Sri Dalada Maligawa — Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Your planned 6 PM Thevava offering ceremony is an excellent reason to keep this evening relatively free. The temple is one of the most important Buddhist religious sites in Sri Lanka and houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. Dress respectfully: Shoulders covered Knees covered Remove shoes before entering designated areas Avoid very casual beachwear Allow some time around the temple complex rather than arriving only for the ceremony. Overnight: Kandy
Day 4 Itinerary
KANDY → NUWARA ELIYA This is the most ambitious day of your itinerary, so I recommend treating Nuwara Eliya as your overnight base rather than trying to overnight in Ella. EARLY DRIVE INTO THE HILL COUNTRY Leave Kandy and drive towards Nuwara Eliya. The journey itself becomes an attraction as the scenery changes from Kandy's tropical environment to the cooler central highlands. You will see: Mountain roads Hanuman Temple visit Tea plantations Waterfalls Tea estates Mist-covered hills Small hill-country villages TEA COUNTRY TEA PLANTATION & TEA FACTORY Continue into the surrounding hill country for a tea plantation and tea factory visit. DISCOVER SRI LANKA Learn about: Tea cultivation Tea picking Withering Rolling Fermentation/oxidation Drying Grading Different grades of Ceylon tea Finish with a tea tasting Make another tea-related stop if you find a suitable plantation/factory along the route. This gives you a chance to see the difference between the tea country around Kandy and the higher-altitude tea-growing areas around Nuwara Eliya. RAMBODA FALLS Stop at Ramboda Falls. The waterfall is located in the dramatic hill country and makes a good roadside sightseeing stop during the journey towards Nuwara Eliya. NUWARA ELIYA Continue towards Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as "Little England" because of its colonial-era architecture and cool mountain climate. Explore: Gregory Lake Nuwara Eliya town Colonial buildings Local market Nuwara Eliya Post Office The post office is particularly photogenic and is one of the town's recognizable colonial-era buildings. MOON PLAINS DISCOVER SRI LANKA If conditions are suitable, continue to Moon Plains. This is particularly worthwhile for the panoramic mountain scenery and open grassland landscape. You can save the more extensive Moon Plains exploration for the following morning if you prefer a less rushed day. Overnight: Nuwara Eliya
Day 5 Itinerary
NUWARA ELIYA → COLOMBO MOON PLAINS If you did not properly explore Moon Plains the previous day, make this your first attraction. Enjoy the mountain and valley views before beginning the long journey towards Colombo. DRIVE TOWARDS COLOMBO Begin your return journey from the hill country towards Colombo. This will be a substantial driving day, so keep additional sightseeing stops limited. The scenery will gradually change from: Highland tea country → mountains → lower countryside → urban Colombo COLOMBO — GALLE FACE GREEN Once in Colombo, check into your hotel and head towards Galle Face Green. Spend some time walking along the waterfront and enjoying the atmosphere. This is a good place to relax after the long drive. SEAFOOD DINNER Have your seafood dinner around the Galle Face/Colombo waterfront area. You can choose between: DISCOVER SRI LANKA Sri Lankan seafood Crab Prawns Fish Cuttlefish Rice and curry Kottu Hoppers EVENING Keep the rest of the evening relaxed. Overnight: Colombo 24 OCTOBER — COLOMBO CITY & HERITAGE DAY GANGARAMAYA TEMPLE Start your Colombo sightseeing with Gangaramaya Temple. Explore the temple complex and its distinctive collection of Buddhist objects, religious artefacts and cultural pieces. The temple is located close to Beira Lake, making it easy to combine the visit with the surrounding Colombo city area. COLOMBO LOTUS TOWER Continue to the Colombo Lotus Tower. The tower provides a different perspective of Colombo, particularly if you visit the observation areas and look across the city. You can combine this with a drive through central Colombo. COLOMBO CITY EXPLORATION Depending on your interest, you can add some of these nearby areas: Colombo Fort Pettah Independence Square Galle Face Beira Lake Old Parliament area Colombo waterfront You don't need to visit every attraction; the idea is to experience a mixture of modern Colombo and its colonial heritage. EVENING — OLD DUTCH HOSPITAL Finish your Sri Lanka trip at the Old Dutch Hospital complex. The restored historic complex is now home to restaurants, cafés and shops and is a pleasant setting for your final evening. Have your dinner here and enjoy a relaxed walk around the old dutch hospital complex.
