1. Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka (Monsoon Guide)

Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate with year-round warmth, but its unique geography means it experiences two separate monsoon cycles. When one coast is rainy, the other is basked in glorious sunshine:

South & West Coasts + Central Hills

Peak Season: December to April

Ideal for Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa whale watching, Bentota beaches, Kandy, and Ella hikes. Calm blue oceans and clear mountain skies.

East & North Coast

Peak Season: May to September

Ideal for Trincomalee beach snorkeling, Pigeon Island diving, Pasikuda shallows, and world-class surfing at Arugam Bay.

2. Visas & Entry Requirements (ETA / e-Visa)

Tourists from the United Kingdom, European Union (Germany, France, Netherlands), Australia, and the United States require an approved electronic visa before boarding their flight to Colombo (CMB):

  • Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your scheduled date of entry.
  • Official Portal: Apply only through the official Sri Lanka eVisa portal. Avoid third-party marked-up agencies.
  • Return Ticket: Keep a copy of your return international air ticket and hotel confirmation ready for immigration officials.

3. Currency, ATMs & Tipping Etiquette

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in star hotels, supermarkets, and tourist restaurants, but cash is essential for street vendors, tuk-tuks, and village stalls:

ATMs Everywhere

Commercial Bank, Bank of Ceylon, and Sampath Bank ATMs accept international Visa/Mastercard debit cards.

Restaurant Tipping

A 10% service charge is usually included on your bill. An additional 5-10% tip for attentive table service is customary.

Driver Chauffeur Tipping

For multi-day tours, international guests typically tip around $10 - $15 USD per day for exceptional safe driving and guidance.

4. Cultural Etiquette & Sacred Temple Dress Codes

Sri Lanka is home to ancient religious traditions. Respecting sacred sites ensures a welcoming and fulfilling cultural experience:

Dress Modestly: Shoulders and knees must be covered. Avoid sleeveless tops, tank tops, or short shorts when visiting temples like Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, Dambulla Cave Temples, or Gangaramaya.
Remove Footwear & Headwear: Shoes and caps must be removed before entering temple compounds. Pro-tip: Bring an extra pair of thick socks to walk comfortably on sun-baked stone courtyards!
Never Turn Your Back on a Buddha Statue: Do not pose with your back turned directly to a Buddha statue for selfies or group photos.

5. Getting Around: The Smartest Way to Travel

While public buses and tuk-tuks are common for short hops, traveling across provinces by public bus can be slow and self-driving is hazardous due to unpredictable traffic. By far, the most comfortable and time-efficient choice for international tourists is hiring a licensed private chauffeur guide.
